Updated: Feb 15, 2020

Cancer develops when abnormal cells grow and multiply abnormally, leading to cancerous tumor growth. Cancer manifests in many forms, but there are some cancers that are far more common than others. Warning signs of cancer that you should look out for include:

  1. A new lump or growth

  2. Abnormal bleeding

  3. Prolonged cough

  4. Unexplained weight loss

  5. Change in bowel movements

Common cancer types

Melanoma

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, and usually develops due to high exposure to sunlight, although skin cancer can occur in any area of the skin. Melanoma begins in the outer layer (epidermis), which is made up of squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes.

Lung cancer

Though one of the most common types of cancer, lung cancer is also one of the most avoidable. There are two types of lung cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. You can significantly reduce your risk for lung cancer simply by avoiding or quitting smoking tobacco products. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

Female breast cancer

The most common form of breast cancer is called ductal carcinoma, which starts in the cells of the ducts, lobules, or other tissues within the breast. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, after skin cancer.

Prostate cancer

Prostate is the most common cancer found in men in the United States, after skin cancer. Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas. Early stages of prostate cancer often don’t exhibit any signs of symptoms, and it’s a very slow-growing type that usually develops in men over the age of 65.
